My Top 20 Songs of 2017

As mentioned in my Top Albums of 2017 post, here is my list of top individual songs released in 2017. Again, this is merely my personal list and in no way all-inclusive of the music industry nor meant to be a representation of the best songs – simply my favorite songs from the past year. I’ll try and keep it short and sweet since we’ve got a lot to get through.

20. HAIM – “Want You Back”

I really wasn’t expecting them to come back with new music after I virtually forgot about them since “The Wire,” but here I am over 6 months later and I’m still bopping to their most recent album. Just know that, @HAIM, I did in fact want you back for more music.

19. Ella Mai – “Breakfast in Bed”

Ella Mai opened for Kehlani when I saw her in concert at the beginning of the year and it was one of those moments where I thought: “Who the heck is on the stage? When does Kehlani come on?” But, I’m glad I actually paid attention cause miss Ella can produce a good song or two. When I tell you my jaw dropped the first time this song came on…

18. Tyler, The Creator – “I Ain’t Got Time!”

One of the first, if not the only, songs of his that I enjoy. It’s not clean nor appropriate for everyday listening but it really gets you going if you wanna add it to your pre-party playlist. I do have time for this record.

17. RAYE – “Decline”

An artist I discovered through Charli XCX (I promise I’ll stop talking about her someday) but I’m so glad I came across this song. One of those songs that just gets better as it goes from start to finish. I mean it samples Ja Rule and Ashanti’s “Always On Time” like come on!!! She even used the term “bugaboo” like what a queen of paying respects to the R&B girls of the 90’s.

16. Tinashe – “Flame”

It’s 2018 and Tinashe is still trying. But lucky for her, I just can’t help but bop to her music. We need to band together to help get this girl’s career up and running again – “2 On” was literally so good so she doesn’t deserve us completely neglecting her existence ever since. She’s supposed to FINALLY release an album in the coming months so *fingers crossed* she comes through.

15. DJ Khaled  – “Wild Thoughts (feat. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller)”

Okay this song was my guilty pleasure in 2017. It still makes me feel like a *wild thot* every time I hear it. I simply don’t think it will ever get old and that’s a fact! I’m just mad I was living abroad when it came out because I’m sure it was played in all the bars and clubs in America and now I have to live with the fact that I missed out on that period of time – must’ve been nice.

14. Betty Who – “Make You Memories”

I don’t know why Betty hasn’t made it bigger in America cause she’s had some quality bops over the years. This is just an all-around feel good song with a catchy killer chorus – one of my favorites from her latest album. If you haven’t heard of her, she’s definitely worth a quick search on YouTube.

13. Tove Lo – “Disco Tits”

IstayhighyoustayhighwestayhighyoulooksoprettyYUP. I still lol at the title. Baffled why this wasn’t a club banger. It’s not too late to get behind this jam though, so add it to your party playlists and get to bopping. (And yeah yeah I’ll shut up about Tove Lo too)

12. Charli XCX – “Porsche (feat. MØ)”

I struggled to pick just one Charli song from the past year cause she’s truly my top artist of 2017, BUT of her latest mixtape, Pop2, this is a clear highlight. And I love MØ, so put them together and you’ve got an undeniable bop. It’s so simple yet so good. It gives a shoutout to Chardonnay too – like who does that in a world of songs with champagne and d’ussé.

11. Aminé – “Spice Girl”

His “Caroline” song drove me nuts for the longest of time, but then I discovered the rest of the album and was pleasantly surprised. There are some other goodies, but I think this is my favorite. I may be biased because I’m a big fan of the Spice Girls but like how cool is an entire song basically dedicated to them (well… sort of).

Sidenote: I’ve spent the majority of the past year thinking his name was “Anime” (like the Japanese animations) and was only just recently informed that apparently I can’t read lol whoops.

10. Migos – “MotorSport (feat. Cardi B & Nicki Minaj)”

I remember thinking “What is so special about this Migos group that is making everybody talk about them?” and then I heard this and was an instant bandwagon fan (actually I wouldn’t even go that far cause I’m truly only here for the girls’ raps but the song slaps and gets people hype so).

I do, however, need Nicki to stop featuring on a new song every other week so she can focus on her new album and release it ASAP.

9. Cardi B – “Bodak Yellow”

I had another song here in its place but then I just felt dumb for not putting “Bodak Yellow” on this list. Like i’m just not gonna sit here and ignore how much this song took over my life (and my playlists). I wish only the best for Cardi B in 2018 cause I’m full here for her shenanigans – we need some new female energy in the hip hop world (and the “Finesse” remix/video is straight FIRE)

8. CNCO – “Reggaetón Lento (Remix) [feat. Little Mix]”

One of my favorite trends of 2017 has been the latin/reggae/dancehall/trop-pop vibes that have taken over the music industry. And I’m still rooting for Little Mix to break through in America. You should still jam to this song regardless of how much Spanish you know.

7. Kehlani – “Undercover”

This is easily my favorite (if not the best) song from her album SweetSexySavage. She performed a tango remix of it live with a rose in her teeth like damn ma do the damn thing. I need more people to know about it so I can dance to it along with them whenever I play it every single time I have the aux.

6. Lorde – “Homemade Dynamite (Remix) [feat. Khalid, SZA & Post Malone]”

“Homemade Dynamite” was easily my favorite song from her most recent album when it came out and then it got even better when she released this star-studded remix of it. Three prominent “new” artists of 2017 all on one track with everybody’s favorite 21 year old from New Zealand who accomplished more than all of us combined while still in high school. (Yes I’m aware they aren’t all new – that’s never stopped the “Best New Artist” award at the VMAs from awarding people who’ve been working in the industry for multiple years)

5. J Balvin & Willy William – “Mi Gente (feat. Beyoncé)

I can’t pretend like I knew of this song before Beyoncé jumped on it but I’m just glad that she did because I needed this in my life. And she released it to help with the hurricane relief which makes it that much better. All of these songs making me want to learn Spanish and I’m totally here for it. *buys Rosetta Stone*

4. SZA – “The Weekend”

Who isn’t a fan of SZA by this point? And like what a low key hoe anthem – literally singing about being a side piece and being totally okay with it. More power to you, girl. The entire length of the :37 second intro where you just KNOW it’s about to go down and then the beat drops and you just scream like a banshee until the lyrics begin. “How you want me when you got a girl?” WIG.

3. Dua Lipa – “New Rules”

The new National Anthem. Sing it with me ladies:

One: Don’t pick up the phone. You know he’s only callin’ ’cause he’s drunk and alone.
Two: Don’t let him in. You’ll have to kick him out again.
Three: Don’t be his friend. You know you’re gonna wake up in his bed in the morning.
And if you’re under him, you ain’t gettin’ over him.
I got new rules, I count ’em.

Like what a concept. Need I explain more…

2. Kesha – “Praying”

This was such a cute bop and kind of came out of nowhere. The next-to-whistle tone part towards the end still gives me chills – I was so SHOOK when I first heard it and still break glasses every time I try to sing along to it. Gotta give Kesha some love: if you’re gonna channel your struggles and frustrations into something, at least something good came out of it! Props – keep doing you, girl.

1. Lady Gaga – “The Cure”

Okay if you know me, then this was an obvious choice for my number one, BUT for once, I don’t even think I’m being biased that I truly think this was one of the best songs released in 2017. And the best part was, we weren’t even expecting it (nor asking for it?) So thanks LG for blessing us with this masterpiece.

I remember watching Coachella (from home on the YouTube livestream cause I’m a big fat LOSER who can’t afford to actually go to Indio, California, but whatever – catch me doing that again in 2018) and she said, “I’ve been so excited for this next part of the show, cause I’ve been trying to keep it a secret for so long” I was quite literally on the edge of my seat and then she started singing a new song… when I tell you my wig orbited the MOON!!! (Only downside is that it sent the internet into a downward spiral when everyone expected a music video, and then more new music, and a new EP/re-release of Joanne… and then none of that happened and we still have no idea why she randomly released this song that sounded NOTHING like the rest of Joanne).

Thank you for reading if you got this far — be on the look out for more posts from me in the future! I plan to cover the 2018 Grammy Awards at the end of January as well as give my reviews of upcoming album releases and the sort.
